Union minister reviews youth, sports & development schemes in Mizoram

Aizawl, Sept 16 (UNI) union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse reviewed implementation of Central schemes and development priorities in Saitual and Kolasib districts during a two-day visit to Mizoram, with emphasis on grassroots sports, youth engagement, drug-abuse prevention, agriculture and connectivity.

At review meetings in the two districts on September 15 and 16, Khadse called for greater coordination among government departments, community organisations and youth groups to prevent substance abuse and expand opportunities for young people through sports, education and employment.

In Saitual, discussions focused on improving market access for organic agricultural produce and strengthening sports infrastructure, coaching and athlete support under schemes such as Khelo India.

In Kolasib, road connectivity, healthcare, agriculture and livelihoods were reviewed. The district has more than 10,000 active farmers, while its Krishi Vigyan Kendra provides technical assistance to over 5,000 growers. The meeting also reviewed 102 functioning cooperatives and the implementation of the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme.

Officials were directed to address beneficiary-data gaps under the Public Distribution System and Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. Support for 25 local enterprises under PMEGP was also discussed.

Sports facilities in Kolasib, particularly for football, hockey and wrestling, were reviewed, with a dedicated training centre proposed. Khadse also suggested developing sports grounds across the district’s 51 villages.

The minister was informed that about 9,000 youths are registered on the MY Bharat platform in Kolasib. She called for greater use of the platform and coordination between its volunteers and police in awareness and drug-prevention campaigns.
