Mizoram's MTP lifts trade embargo on Myanmar border

Aizawl, Sep 24 (UNI) The Mara Thyutlia Py (MTP), the largest civil society organisation in south Mizoram's Siaha district, has decided to resume unregulated border trade with Myanmar from Thursday afternoon, ending a week-long suspension imposed after a confrontation between Myanmar traders and MTP volunteers at Khaikhy village.
The MTP executive committee, meeting at its general headquarters in Siaha on Thursday, resolved to lift the embargo on trading activities with Myanmar's Rakhine and southern Chin states from 4 pm.
The organisation had suspended the movement of goods through the Khaikhy, Lomasu and Lodaw entry points from 7pm on September 16 following the September 14 incident at Khaikhy, where traders and boatmen from Rakhine state allegedly clashed with MTP volunteers deployed at a duty post.
The decision to restore the trade followed a meeting between MTP leaders and representatives of the United League of Arakan (ULA), an armed group based in Rakhine state that is fighting Myanmar's military government.
The talks were held on Thursday morning at the MTP General Headquarters Conference Hall in Siaha.
MTP president S Vabeihasa and vice-president FC Khihnia led the MTP delegation, while the ULA was represented by Border Relation Officer Chonai and County Administrator Nan Zing, according to an MTP statement.
During the meeting, the ULA delegation expressed regret over the September 14 incident at Khaikhy, which occurred amid a dispute over the selection of boats in rotation to transport goods across the border, the MTP said.
The ULA representatives also conveyed their desire to maintain a good working relationship with the MTP in the future. Following the discussions, the MTP executive committee decided to withdraw its earlier suspension and allow border trade to resume.
The September 16 decision to halt trade had followed a report submitted by the MTP Phura Sub-Headquarters after an on-the-spot assessment of the Khaikhy incident. The report was submitted on Tuesday and detailed the altercation between Rakhine traders and transporters and MTP volunteers.
Khaikhy, Lomasu and Lodaw are major points for informal cross-border trade between traders in Myanmar's Rakhine state and southern Mizoram.
A large volume of goods transported from Mizoram through these points is destined for Rakhine and southern Chin, where access to supplies from other parts of Myanmar has been severely disrupted since the military coup.
According to the MTP, more than 100 pick-up trucks transport goods to Khaikhy every day. From there, over 100 boats ferry the consignments along the Salalui river to Salachhuah village in Rakhine state.
The informal trade network has become an important supply route for parts of Rakhine and southern Chin, which have faced prolonged disruption of regular supply lines following the political and armed conflict in Myanmar.
Essential commodities, including fuel, are supplied to the areas largely through southern Mizoram.
The week-long suspension therefore affected a trade route on which communities on both sides of the border depend for the movement of essential goods.
With the MTP now withdrawing the embargo, movement of goods through the three entry points is expected to resume from Thursday evening. UNI ZC SAS
