Mumbai: BMC clarifies death of two patients in govt hospital not due to Covid 19

Mumbai, May 19 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday clarified that the deaths of two patients at the state government-run King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Parel, were due to co-morbidities and not because of COVID-19.
The civic body advised citizens not to panic while all precautions should be taken .
It may be recalled that a 59-year-old woman with cancer and a 14-year-old girl with kidney disease died at KEM hospital. Both tested positive for COVID-19 posthumously.
Doctors clarified that these deaths on Sunday were not caused due to Covid-19.
Former mayor Kishori Pednekar, while talking to media, said that as per the information she gathered, the swabs of the patient who died on Sunday did not test positive for any other illnesses; however, the patient tested positive for COVID-19. And thus, it seems that the cause of death is that,” he said.
However, hospital authorities have denied the claims and have stated that there is no need to panic and that there are no signs of any other pandemic.
Since COVID-19 happened, it has become a protocol to test patients with such illnesses for the same.
COVID has now become more like a flu and those with breathing problems, cough, or cold of a severe level generally test positive for COVID-19.
This does not mean that the virus is back or is spreading again. Last week, 15 patients tested positive for COVID. The reason for death mentioned on this lady's certificate is also different. So there is no need to panic,” said Dr Mohan Desai, medical superintendent, KEM Hospital.
Meanwhile, the Health Department of the BMC issued a statement and stated that COVID-19 is now considered to be an endemic and continuous health problem.
Since the virus of the disease has stabilised at the level of residence, civilian diseased patients are found to be very occasional. Over the past few days, the number of COVID-19 patients in Singapore, Hong Kong, East Asia and other countries has been increasing. Ongoing health problems, and very few cases of the infection have been found, and that too sporadically.
BMC is constantly monitoring the spread of COVID-19. From January 2025 to April 2025, the number of COVID-19 patients is very low. But since the beginning of May, there have been some cases of COVID-19. However, the BMC administration is appealing to citizens not to panic in this regard," the statement added.
The BMC also said it has made arrangements for treatment of COVID-19 patients like earmarking special beds and rooms for them in municipal hospitals in Mumbai. If necessary, this capacity will be increased immediately, the statement added.
