Nagpur to get India's first Super-Speciality Dental Centre soon : Fadnavis

Nagpur, Sep 27 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday directed officials to fast-track the remaining work on India’s first Super-Speciality Dental Care and Research Centre in Nagpur and ensure that the facility is inaugurated within the next three months.
The directive was issued during a review of ongoing and pending projects at the Government Medical College campus.
Once operational, the state-of-the-art centre is expected to strengthen advanced dental healthcare services in Vidarbha and Central India while enhancing opportunities for specialised education and research.
The Government Dental College and Hospital, Nagpur, which functions under the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), has been catering to patients since 1968 and receives nearly 500 patients daily, many of whom travel from different parts of Vidarbha and neighbouring regions.
The upcoming centre is being constructed over a built-up area of about 4,770 square metres on nearly 22,000 square feet of land. The foundation stone for the project was laid on January 4, 2019, by then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Officials said nearly 80 per cent of the construction work has been completed, with the remaining work progressing at a steady pace.
Additional financial provisions have been made for electrical installations, for which administrative approval was granted in October 2024.
To ensure smooth functioning of the facility, the state government has sanctioned 91 posts. Of these, 60 positions have already been filled, while recruitment for the remaining vacancies is in progress.
The government has also approved the purchase of specialised medical equipment worth around Rs 3.89 crore through the District Planning Committee. A further Rs 3.43 crore has been sanctioned under a state scheme, and procurement procedures are currently underway.
The Government Dental College presently offers 63 Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) seats and 24 Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) seats, apart from fellowship and PhD programmes. The institution has also secured NAAC A accreditation.
The new facility will feature six specialised departments — Digital Dentistry, Cosmetic Dentistry, Oral Implantology, Sports Dentistry, Craniofacial Surgery and Forensic Odontology — enabling treatment of complex dental disorders through advanced technology and modern clinical practices.
Besides improving patient care, the centre is expected to provide undergraduate and postgraduate students with hands-on exposure to emerging dental technologies and specialised treatment methodologies.
Maharashtra currently has four government-run dental colleges, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation-operated Nair Hospital Dental College in Mumbai and more than 30 private dental colleges.
With the Chief Minister setting a three-month deadline for completion, authorities are expected to accelerate the remaining work. Once commissioned, the Nagpur facility is likely to become a key hub for advanced dental treatment, academic training and research in Central India.
