Nana Patekar dies at 75, leaves behind five-decade legacy in Indian cinema

Mumbai, Oct 8 (UNI) Veteran actor Nana Patekar, who began his career on the theatre stage, made his film debut with Gaman in 1978 and went on to establish himself as one of the most versatile performers in Indian cinema.
Patekar received the National Film Award for his performance in Parinda (1989) and won the National Film Award for Best Actor for Krantiveer (1994). Over the years, he delivered acclaimed performances in films including Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi: The Musical, Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan, Raajneeti and Welcome, besides several Marathi films.
His performance as gangster Uday Shetty in the 2007 comedy Welcome showcased another side of his acting and became one of his most popular and memorable roles. He later reprised the character in Welcome Back.
In Marathi cinema, Patekar's portrayal of a retired theatre actor in Natsamrat (2016) was widely regarded as one of the significant performances of his career. He also played the lead role in Dr. Prakash Baba Amte – The Real Hero, for which he received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Marathi).
Patekar also worked as a director and writer. He directed, acted in and co-wrote Prahaar: The Final Attack, released in 1991.
A recipient of three National Film Awards, Patekar was conferred the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to the field of arts. He was also associated with social initiatives through the Naam Foundation.
With a career spanning nearly five decades across theatre, Hindi and Marathi cinema, Patekar leaves behind a significant body of work that has earned him recognition for his versatility as an actor, director and writer.
Notably, Nana Patekar passed away in the early hours of Thursday, October 8, after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa.
