Raj Thackeray mourns Nana Patekar's death, says 'the safety valve of common man's anger is gone'

Mumbai, Oct 8 (UNI) In a profound and poignant assessment of Indian cinema following the sudden passing of veteran actor Nana Patekar, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray paid tribute to the legendary actor, describing him as the 'ultimate safety valve' who channeled the simmering rage and suppressed angst of the common man on the silver screen.
Patekar, 75, passed away in the early hours of Thursday at his residence in Goa after suffering a cardiac arrest.
In a detailed analytical tribute shared on the social media platform X, Thackeray drew a compelling parallel between societal stability and cinematic expression, stating that stellar performers like Patekar and Amitabh Bachchan successfully vented the bottled-up frustrations of a marginalized working class.
"The common man’s life is a constant cycle of humiliation, class struggle, and helplessness—simmering internally like a pressure cooker," Thackeray wrote. "Had actors like Nana not channeled this collective, burning rage onto the screen, the country would have plunged into social anarchy every single month."
Tracing Patekar's illustrious trajectory from experimental theatre milestones like Hamidabai Chi Kothi to cinematic masterclasses such as Parinda, Krantiveer, Ab Tak Chhappan, and Natasamrat, the MNS leader noted how the actor effortlessly mirrored Mumbai’s socioeconomic evolution.
He captured everything from the despair following the closure of textile mills and the shadows of the underworld to the shifting aspirations of a post-liberalization middle class.
In a striking cross-cultural observation, Thackeray compared Patekar to Hollywood icon Morgan Freeman. While Freeman’s screen presence projected hard-earned wisdom and stoic acceptance, Patekar’s performances radiated an unbridled, rebellious fury—the defiant roar of a man pushed to his limits by a flawed system.
Thackeray also credited Patekar as the pioneer of 2000s content-driven cinema, paving the way for raw, powerful narratives over cookie-cutter aesthetics.
While acknowledging Patekar's famously uncompromising and blunt temperament—which he noted cost the industry immensely due to cautious filmmakers—Thackeray concluded that the veteran was not merely an actor, but the living, breathing embodiment of the common man's daily hustle and unyielding resilience.
