Nashik: FDA seizes 'hair growth oil' worth R 50.35 Lakh being sold without manufacturing licence

Mumbai, Nov 6 (UNI) The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized Ayurvedic hair growth oil worth Rs 50.35 lakh from a Nashik-based establishment for allegedly being sold without mandatory manufacturing and licensing particulars, following its promotion on social media with claims of regrowing hair on bald heads.
The FDA's Nashik Division conducted the seizure on November 5 after receiving confidential information about the product's advertisements and sale through platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.
According to an official release, the oil, marketed under the brand name 'VS Hair Growth Oil', was being sold through M/s V. S. New Fashion Zone, a beauty salon and imitation jewellery outlet located at College Road in Nashik.
An inquiry revealed that the product label mentioned the name of the marketing firm, batch number, manufacturing date and maximum retail price, but did not disclose the manufacturer's name and address or the mandatory manufacturing licence number.
Following verification, FDA officials inspected the premises in the presence of independent witnesses and seized the available stock under the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
The seized stock consisted of 5,040 bottles of 100 ml each, bearing batch number VS 1984 and a manufacturing date of September 2026. With each bottle priced at Rs 999, the total value of the seized consignment was Rs 50,34,960.
The FDA said the establishment's proprietor, Yogesh Bhagat, failed to produce a manufacturing licence or other statutory permissions required for the product.
Samples of the seized oil and other products found at the premises have been collected for laboratory examination. The department is also probing the identity of the actual manufacturer and the circumstances surrounding the production and marketing of the hair oil.
Further legal action will be taken against those found responsible after completion of the investigation, the FDA said.
The administration has meanwhile cautioned consumers against falling prey to misleading advertisements on social media that promise miraculous results, including curing baldness, restoring hair growth and reducing weight.
