Sindhudurg: Two forest Dept personnel seriously injured in wasp attack while tracking elephant Omkar

Sindhudurg, Nov 6 ( UNI) Two Forest Department personnel were seriously injured after a swarm of wasps attacked them while they were tracking elephant Omkar in the forest area of Konsi village in Sindhudurg district.
The injured employees are currently undergoing treatment at the Sub-District Hospital in Sawantwadi. The incident has triggered concern among forest personnel working in the area.
According to information, a team of Forest Department employees had ventured into the forest to track the movements of Omkar, an elephant roaming in the region.
During the operation, the elephant accidentally stepped on an underground wasp nest, causing hundreds of wasps to emerge suddenly and attack the forest personnel present nearby.
The sudden attack sent the employees into a panic as a large swarm of wasps spread across the area within moments.
In an attempt to save themselves, the personnel rushed out of the forest. Two employees sustained serious injuries, while several others were also reportedly stung by the wasps.
The injured personnel were immediately shifted to the Sawantwadi Sub-District Hospital for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, after the incident, Forest Department personnel resumed efforts to trace Omkar's movements and found that the elephant was still inside the forest. He reportedly continued to stay in the forest area.
With the Forest Department already facing the challenge of monitoring Omkar's movements, the wasp attack has raised fresh concerns over the safety of personnel deployed in the forest.
The incident once again highlights the risks and challenging conditions faced by forest staff while carrying out surveillance and patrol operations in wildlife habitats.
