NCERT opens enrolment for 40-week online science teaching programme for grades 6-8

Panchkula, Oct 6 (UNI) The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced a 40-week online programme, “Teaching of Science at Middle Stage (Grades 6-8),” designed to enhance the professional skills of pre-service and in-service science teachers nationwide.

According to the NCERT course document for 2026-27, enrolment is open until November 12. The course will begin on November 16, 2026, and is tentatively scheduled to conclude on August 31, 2027.
This fully online Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is intended for teachers of science in Classes 6 to 8. NCERT stated that the programme aims to support the professional development of pre-service and in-service teachers and help them become “reflective and competent practitioners”.

The course will use multimedia-based interactive materials and offer flexible learning opportunities. Modules are designed to guide participants from basic concepts to a deeper understanding of science teaching and learning.
NCERT said, the programme consists of 40 modules, each requiring approximately six to eight hours to complete. A new module will be released every Monday and should be completed within a week.
It will include an objective test at the end of each module and a final examination. Each module test will remain available for 15 days. Participants will be eligible for the final timed examination only after completing all modules and appearing in all 40 tests, NCERT added.
The programme is open to candidates with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree, current science teachers for Grades 6-8, individuals with a diploma or degree in education, pre-service teachers pursuing these qualifications, and others directly involved in science education, as specified by NCERT.
NCERT has, however, clarified that the programme is purely academic and is not equivalent to any qualification required for appointment as a teacher. It also cannot be claimed as a basis for exemption from any prescribed teacher-appointment qualification.
A one-time enrolment fee of Rs 2,000 applies, with no additional charges. Payment must be made online. Applicants will receive an invitation email from NCERTX, typically within a week of payment, with instructions to complete the enrolment process.
Participants can access the programme at any time from any location during the course period using a laptop or desktop computer with internet access.
On successful completion, NCERT will award an e-certificate in “Teaching of Science at Middle Stage”, the document said.
