New shipping service links Cochin with key Middle East hubs

Kochi, Sep 21 (UNI) A new fortnightly shipping service connecting Cochin with key destinations in the Middle East has commenced operations from Cochin Port, providing exporters and importers in southern India with direct access to markets in the UAE, Oman and Yemen.
The MGR IFR Service connects Cochin in Kerala and Nhava Sheva in Maharashtra with Fujairah in the UAE, Sohar in Oman and Aden in Yemen, strengthening shipping connectivity and offering faster cargo movement to the region.
The service is operated by two vessels, M.V. Marsa Virgo and M.V. Marsa Zenith, each with a capacity of more than 500 TEUs per voyage. The inaugural call of M.V. Marsa Virgo at DP World Cochin saw the terminal handle more than 1,000 TEUs.
The service operates on the rotation of Cochin, Nhava Sheva, Fujairah, Sohar, Aden and Cochin, providing a direct link between southern India and major Middle Eastern trade hubs and onward global trade routes.
DP World Cochin, which operates the terminal, said the new service would expand connectivity options for customers and strengthen supply-chain resilience for businesses across southern India.
The terminal has also recorded strong cargo growth, achieving its highest-ever monthly throughput of 97,952 TEUs in August, a 51 per cent increase year-on-year. The terminal had handled more than 74,000 TEUs in each of the preceding months.
Ravinder Johal, COO, Ports & Terminals, Commercial and Operations, SCO, CA, Levant and Egypt region, DP World, said the new port call under the MGR service would provide customers with greater choice, reliable connections and improved access to key Middle Eastern markets.
He said the company was working with shipping line partners to strengthen supply-chain resilience, optimise cargo flows and support EXIM businesses in managing disruptions and improving delivery efficiency.
Cochin's strategic location provides coastal connectivity to ports along India's western and eastern coasts, from Gujarat to Kolkata, making it an important transit point for cargo moving between the country's east and west coasts.
