Telangana Govt takes over Hyderabad Metro Rail from L&T

Hyderabad, Apr 29 (UNI) In a major development, the Telangana government has taken over Phase-I operations of the Hyderabad Metro Rail from Larsen & Toubro through a formal agreement executed on Wednesday.
The takeover was completed through Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), with the government acquiring 100 per cent shares of L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (LTMRHL) for an equity value of Rs 1,461.47 crore.
The agreement was signed at the State Secretariat in the presence of senior officials, including Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao and Special Chief Secretary Jayesh Ranjan.
Under the agreement, the existing debt of Rs 13,538.53 crore will be refinanced with the Telangana government’s guarantee. The deal is expected to enable better coordination in planning, expansion and service delivery of the metro network.
Operational since November 2017, Phase-I of the Hyderabad Metro spans 69 km across three corridors and currently serves around 4.5 lakh passengers daily. So far, the system has recorded nearly 86 crore passenger journeys.
Officials said the government takeover will help improve passenger services and accelerate future expansion, including Phase-II projects, with a focus on building a more integrated and commuter-friendly metro network.
Ahead of the agreement, L&T Chairman and MD S N Subrahmanyan met Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and discussed key aspects related to the transition, an official statement said.
