Tata Sons governance row: Six Parsi groups write to PM Modi in support of Tata Trusts

New Delhi, Oct 23 (UNI) Six Parsi and Zoroastrian community organisations have approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing support for Tata Trusts and the Tata family amid the ongoing dispute over the governance of Tata Sons.
The organisations have called for the preservation of the Tata Group’s existing ownership framework, arguing that it has played a key role in safeguarding the conglomerate’s long-term vision and philanthropic commitments.
In a letter dated October 7, the signatories said the developments surrounding Tata Trusts and Tata Sons had consequences extending beyond a disagreement over corporate governance. They maintained that the outcome could influence the future direction of one of India’s most prominent business groups, as well as its legacy of philanthropy and social responsibility.
The letter was signed by representatives of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP), the Federation of Parsi Zoroastrian Anjumans of India (FPZAI), the Federation of Zoroastrian Associations of North America (FEZANA), the Zoroastrian Trust Funds of Europe (ZTFE), the Global Council of Zoroastrians Trust (GCZT) and the World Zoroastrian Chamber of Commerce (WZCC).
A key issue highlighted by the organisations was the possibility of Tata Sons being listed on the stock market. They cautioned against viewing a potential listing solely through the lens of regulatory compliance, arguing that such a move could have broader implications for the company's decision-making, investment strategy and governance structure.
The signatories said changes that shift the balance towards short-term market expectations could undermine the principles that have shaped Tata Sons and the wider group. They stressed that the existing structure had allowed the conglomerate to prioritise long-term investments while maintaining its focus on ethical business practices and public welfare.
Tata Trusts collectively hold a 66 per cent stake in Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, placing the charitable trusts at the centre of its ownership and governance framework. According to the organisations, this arrangement has helped the group balance commercial objectives with its philanthropic responsibilities.
The letter also highlighted the Tata Group's contribution to India's industrial and institutional development, citing its role in areas such as aviation, scientific research, education and healthcare. Institutions mentioned included the Indian Institute of Science, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Tata Memorial Hospital.
The organisations further pointed to the group's investments in emerging and strategically important sectors, including information technology, defence, semiconductors, clean energy and electric mobility. They argued that these investments reflected a commitment to building India's long-term capabilities rather than focusing exclusively on immediate financial returns.
Linking the issue to India's ambition of becoming a developed nation by 2047, the signatories said preserving the group's approach to business and philanthropy was important for employment generation, strategic development and global competitiveness.
Describing the Tata Group as an institution with national and international significance, the organisations said its reputation extended well beyond the Parsi community. They urged all stakeholders to consider the broader public interest while addressing the ongoing differences and called for the values associated with the Tata name to be preserved for future generations.
