Bihar inaugurates first 12-MW data centre, targets 1,000 MW capacity in five years

Patna, Oct 13 (UNI) Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Tuesday inaugurated the state's first 12-megawatt data centre, established by CtrlS Datacenters in the Pataliputra Industrial Area here, marking a significant step towards strengthening the state's digital infrastructure and attracting technology-led investments.
Addressing the gathering, Choudhary said the establishment of the data centre was an important milestone in Bihar's industrial and technological development.
He called for greater private investment to accelerate industrial growth in the state.
He said the Rs 10,000-crore MoU would open up opportunities for further investments in IT and AI, while strengthening Bihar''s position as an emerging destination for technology-driven industries.
The chief minister set a target of establishing data centres with a combined capacity of at least 1,000 MW in Bihar over the next five years and urged CtrlS to play a leading role in expanding the sector in the state.
Emphasising the importance of industrialisation in generating employment and strengthening the economy, Choudhary said increased investment would create new job opportunities and expand economic activity.
He noted that improvements in roads, electricity and other infrastructure had created a foundation for the next phase of industrial development.
Referring to the development agenda under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the chief minister said the country was working towards the goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
He also highlighted infrastructure development undertaken in Bihar between 2005 and 2025 under former chief minister Nitish Kumar, and stressed the need to build on these gains through accelerated industrial expansion.
Choudhary said reliable electricity supply and improved infrastructure were essential for attracting large-scale industries. The state government was also exploring renewable energy opportunities to meet the growing power requirements of industrial establishments, he added.
The chief minister said the government was working to ensure land availability for new industrial units, referring to ongoing processes involving around 13,000 acres of land for industrial development across different parts of Bihar.
He also called for promoting electronics manufacturing and other industrial activities in areas across the Ganga, including the Hajipur region. Industrial growth, he said, would be linked with the development of expressways, highways and other infrastructure to create new investment opportunities.
Highlighting the state''s fiscal position, Choudhary said Bihar's budget was approximately Rs 3.47 lakh crore, while its own revenue stood at around Rs 70,000 crore.
He emphasised the need to increase the state's own revenue to Rs 2 lakh crore, stating that substantial expansion in industry, technology and investment would be necessary to achieve the target.
The state government was committed to providing investors with the necessary facilities and an enabling environment for industrial development, he said, expressing confidence that fresh investments would strengthen Bihar's economy and create employment opportunities.
The inauguration comes against the backdrop of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) worth Rs 10,000 crore between the state Industries Department and CtrlS, aimed at promoting investment in information technology (IT), artificial intelligence (AI) and related industrial activities. CtrlS established the data centre under the Bihar IT Policy 2024.
