Consultations will be held before deciding on UCC implementation: CM Conrad Sangma

Shillong, Sep 16 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has asserted that any discussion on implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Meghalaya must take into account the state's distinct tribal and matrilineal traditions.
He further stressed that no decision should be taken without first consulting citizens and stakeholders.
“If you recall, in my opening remarks when I talked about UCC, I had said that as a concept, UCC being applied to India is something that does not make sense to me,” the CM said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said the UCC will be introduced in all states by 2029.
However, the CM stated that the Centre’s reported position that the UCC will be state-specific has changed the nature of the discussion.
“Now, in fact, if you look at the UCC for Meghalaya, it’s a tribal UCC, if it comes. And the system is going to be something that’s going to be more like a matrilineal society,” Sangma said.
He added that it will be wrong to presume the contents of a proposed law or arrive at conclusions before seeing the actual Bill.
“If a national law were to make all communities follow a matrilineal system, Meghalaya will be among the happiest states to accept it,” he said, and acknowledged that such a system may not be acceptable to all communities living in the state.
“If we put in our UCC tomorrow that from now on every community is going to be matrilineal in Meghalaya, I think a lot of other communities who don’t follow the matrilineal system may not be very comfortable with that,” he said.
Sangma stated that the state must first discuss with all stakeholders whether they wants to implement the UCC and, if so, what kind of legal framework will be suitable.
“We are to take the public into confidence. We have to discuss with stakeholders, political parties and, more importantly, communities,” he said.
Stating that Meghalaya’s predominantly tribal population must be considered while framing any such law, the Chief Minister said that the state also has different communities with different social and customary practices. UNI RRK ATP SAS

Odisha: 12 get life imprisonment for killing man, son over witchcraft suspicion

Bhubaneswar, Sep 17 (UNI) A court in Odisha’s Gajapati district on Thursday sentenced 12 people to life imprisonment for murdering a man and his son five years ago on suspicion that they practised witchcraft, police said.
Additional Sessions Judge, Paralakhemundi, H P Pattanaik convicted all 12 accused in the double murder case and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
