World Skill Centre in Bhubaneswar emerges as model for industry-oriented skilling: NITI Aayog

Bhubaneswar, Sep 17 (UNI) The World Skill Centre (WSC) in Bhubaneswar has emerged as a model for industry-oriented skill development, with NITI Aayog recognising its role in equipping youth with skills aligned to the evolving requirements of the industrial sector.
The premier skill development centre has been cited as a model in NITI Aayog’s recent report titled ‘Reimagining Skilling for Viksit Bharat’, which highlighted the importance of providing industry-relevant training to prepare young people for emerging employment opportunities.
Established by the Odisha Government, the World Skill Centre offers training programmes in advanced and specialised fields aimed at meeting the requirements of the future industrial sector.
The centre has world-class laboratories equipped with modern machinery, providing students with opportunities for hands-on training and practical exposure to enhance their technical skills.
Welcoming the NITI Aayog report, WSC Chief Executive Officer Rashmi Ranjan Mahapatra said the state government planned to replicate the World Skill Centre model in other parts of Odisha.
“Two more centres will be established in Sambalpur and Berhampur in the coming days. Training at these centres will be designed keeping in view the requirements of local industries and employment opportunities,” he said.
Mahapatra said the Sambalpur centre would provide training in areas such as agritech, renewable energy and retailing, while the Berhampur centre would offer programmes in marine technology, underwater welding and healthcare assistance.
He said plans were also underway to introduce training programmes in the semiconductor and aviation sectors at the World Skill Centre in Bhubaneswar.
“Our key objective is to expand opportunities for skill development across various sectors and take these opportunities to the youth in different parts of the state,” Mahapatra said.
The World Skill Centre has also recently signed 25 MoUs with government and private engineering colleges and universities to strengthen collaboration between industry and educational institutions.
The NITI Aayog report has stressed the need to align education and skilling with industry requirements and recommended promoting training, apprenticeships and ‘earn while you learn’ models in partnership with leading industrial organisations.
Odisha is among the five states selected for the State Skills Transformation Pilot announced in the union Budget 2026-27.
NITI Aayog has also identified Odisha’s ‘Skilled in Odisha’ programme as a notable state-level initiative in the country’s skill development sector.
