Meghalaya govt following all prescribed procedures to appoint new DGP, says DyCM Tynsong

Shillong, Oct 15 (UNI) Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home, Prestone Tynsong, on Thursday said the state government is following all prescribed procedures to appoint a new Director General of Police (DGP).
Tynsong was responding to the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP), which had questioned the state government’s repeated delays in sending a proposal to the union Public Service Commission (UPSC), stalling the Empanelment Committee Meeting (ECM) required to select Nongrang’s successor.
“What delay? When is this present incumbent DGP retiring?” Tynsong asked.
Nongrang, the first woman DGP of Meghalaya and from the North Eastern States, will superannuate on November 23, 2026.
Tynsong said the government was complying with the requirements of the UPSC and the union Ministry of Home Affairs.
“Well, whatever the UPSC or Ministry of Home Affairs requires, we are complying with all procedures. In case they (VPP) want to know more, I would like to request them to come and meet me personally,” the Deputy Chief Minister said.
“Let them come and meet me personally. It is not proper just to talk to the press about these official issues. I will explain to them the actualities,” Tynsong added.
Earlier, VPP Spokesperson Dr. Dr. Airpeace Well Rani slammed the state government over its inaction despite repeated reminders from UPSC to submit the proposal to convene the ECM and prepare the candidate panel for appointment to the post of DGP.
On September 24, UPSC Under Secretary Sanjay Kumar sent a fresh reminder to State Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed to enforce strict compliance with the Supreme Court’s directions for appointment to the post of DGP
“Is this merely administrative inefficiency, a lack of urgency, or is there some other reason for the delay? The people of Meghalaya deserve a clear and convincing explanation,” the VPP demanded.
Emphasising that appointing the state's police chief is a matter of considerable public importance, Rani stated that the issue directly impacts the leadership of the police force, institutional accountability, and the effective functioning of law enforcement.
“Such a process cannot be allowed to remain pending without a satisfactory explanation, particularly when the UPSC has explicitly referred to compliance with the directions of the Supreme Court,” the VPP Spokesperson observed.
Rani said the VPP demanded that the state government clarify the reasons for this prolonged delay, disclose the present status of the proposal, and explain what action has been taken to ensure compliance with the applicable legal and procedural requirements.
