Rural-urban convergence: BMC to collect dry waste from 31 gram panchayats

Bhubaneswar,Oct 2 (UNI) The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will undertake collection and transportation of dry waste from 31 gram panchayats across four blocks of Khurda district under the State Government’s Rural-Urban Convergence initiative.
The panchayats in Bhubaneswar, Jatani, Balipatna and Balianta blocks have been tagged with the BMC for transportation of dry and recyclable waste to its designated Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs).
The civic body will deploy seven Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) to collect waste from designated points in the panchayats and transport it to the MRFs for segregation, material recovery and recycling.
The initiative will cover 20 gram panchayats in Bhubaneswar block, five in Jatani, three in Balipatna and three in Balianta.
Officials said the arrangement would enable the BMC to utilise its existing MRF infrastructure to process additional dry waste generated in the tagged panchayats. It is also aimed at ensuring scientific handling of recyclable waste and preventing its unmanaged disposal.
The initiative is part of the State Government’s effort to establish a rural-urban convergence mechanism for waste management, linking the waste collection systems of gram panchayats with the processing infrastructure available with urban local bodies.UNI MK AAB
