TSPCB hands over 35 noise monitoring devices to Tripura police

Agartala, Oct 12 (UNI) To bolster noise pollution oversight and regulatory enforcement, the Tripura State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) distributed 35 Sound Level Metres to the Police Department during a ceremony held today.
Dr Bishu Karmakar, Member Secretary of TSPCB, explained that this initiative is designed to strengthen police personnel's ability to accurately measure noise levels using scientific methods and implement corrective measures against breaches of established noise standards, especially during the forthcoming Durga Puja and Diwali festivities.
According to Dr Karmakar, the instruments were acquired to reinforce compliance with the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000. These tools will enable police to track excessive noise from loudspeakers, public address systems, vehicle horns, commercial operations, and public events, facilitating enforcement action against offenders.
For over two decades, TSPCB has conducted noise pollution assessments during festival periods using its internal resources; however, this approach has proven ineffective in deterring repeat violations. Consequently, TSPCB transferred the monitoring equipment to police to enable immediate intervention.
Manchak Ippar, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), accepted the equipment on behalf of Tripura Police and stated that this programme would empower law enforcement to respond swiftly to violations. He noted that both air and noise pollution levels in Tripura appear to be rising, and only heightened public awareness can mitigate environmental deterioration.
TSPCB conducted comprehensive training sessions for police personnel from various districts on equipment operation and pollution assessment procedures. The event also featured practical demonstrations on device handling and operational techniques.
