Abhishek Banerjee seeks 48 hours’ notice for police questioning

Kolkata, Oct 12 (UNI) A defiant Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee did not appear at the Shakespeare Sarani Police Station here on Monday in response to summons served on him at his Kalighat residence by officers on Sunday.
According to sources, he informed the police via email that he required at least 48 hours' notice prior to the interrogation.
The incident stemmed from a scuffle between the MP's supporters and officials from the police and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation in August regarding the removal of a billboard at Banerjee's Camac Street office. The police have registered three FIRs and are investigating the matter.
He had previously been summoned in connection with the Camac Street incident and had appeared before the police. Investigators wished to question him again, prompting the visit to his home on Sunday to serve the notice.
In his email, Banerjee wrote, "I am a Member of Parliament and have certain pre-scheduled engagements. I was served a notice on October 11 and asked to appear the very next day. It is not possible for me to appear on such short notice. Issuing a directive to appear without allowing adequate time is unilateral, arbitrary, and unreasonable." He requested the police to issue a fresh summons allowing at least 48 hours' notice.
Police had previously visited his home last Wednesday to serve the summons, but he was in Delhi at the time. There was no one present at his residence to receive the notice, so the officers had to return. Banerjee returned to Kolkata from Delhi on Saturday, and the police subsequently visited his Kalighat home on Sunday to serve the notice. However, he did not appear for questioning on Monday in response to the summons.
A commotion ensued on August 27 regarding the removal of a billboard from his office on Camac Street. It is alleged that the police forcibly climbed onto the building's roof to take down the billboard bearing the Trinamool name. The claim was that the billboard was hanging illegally and precariously, posing a safety risk to local residents. Shortly thereafter, however, Banerjee's team put up a banner bearing the Trinamool name at the same location.
The police now wish to question him again based on the FIR filed in connection with that day's incident. UNI BGA NST CDS
