Bihar: Congress marches against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, demands his resignation

Patna, Oct 8 (UNI) Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee president Rajesh Ram today demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, asserting that public confidence in democracy and the electoral process could not be restored without his removal.
The Bihar Congress organised a protest march in the state capital under the slogan “Gyanesh Bhagao, Loktantra Bachao” (Remove Gyanesh, Save Democracy), with thousands of party workers participating in the march from the Shaheed Smarak to Raj Bhavan.
The protesters raised slogans against the Chief Election Commissioner and demanded his resignation. Police detained state Congress president Rajesh Ram along with several party leaders and workers during the march. The detained protesters were taken to different police stations, party sources said.
Addressing the protesters, Ram said the Congress was fighting an uncompromising battle to protect people''s votes and democratic rights. “Elections are the foundation of democracy. Any question over the electoral process affects the credibility of the democratic system,” he said.
The state Congress president said the party would continue to raise the issue among the people and take the fight for democracy to the streets as well as every democratic platform.
He alleged that attempts were being made to undermine people''s voting rights and asserted that the Congress would not allow anyone to “steal” the people''s mandate.
“We will fight with full strength for people''s rights. The Congress voice will not be silenced against those weakening democracy,” Ram said.
Thousands of Congress workers participating in the march raised slogans including “Gyanesh Bhagao, Loktantra Bachao”, “Stop Vote Theft” and “Protect Democracy”, pressing for action against the Chief Election Commissioner.
