Odisha: Debrigarh sanctuary deploys AI to track wildlife, detect threats

Bhubaneswar, Oct 13 (UNI) Authorities of Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha’s Bargarh district have stepped up wildlife protection with an AI-powered surveillance system that tracks animal movements, detects suspicious human activity and helps identify forest fires in real time.
The system combines an e-Eye surveillance tower with 18 AI-enabled camera traps to strengthen round-the-clock monitoring and anti-poaching efforts.
Installed at Chourasimal and operational since December 2025, the tower covers around 70 sq. km within a monitoring radius of 5–6 km. Its optical and thermal cameras track wildlife and human movement by day and night, said Hirakud Wildlife Division Divisional Forest Officer Anshu Pragyan Das.
The camera traps, installed in remote forest interiors, automatically identify species such as gaur, leopard, sambar, spotted deer, sloth bear and nilgai. Wireless networking enables remote transmission of images and data, reducing the need for frequent visits to sensitive habitats.
Information from both systems is relayed to the central control room at Zero Point, enabling forest personnel to monitor wildlife movements, detect potential threats and coordinate timely responses. The technology also aids forest-fire detection, habitat monitoring and conservation planning while minimising human disturbance.
The AI-based system complements Debrigarh’s intensive ground surveillance, with forest personnel covering nearly 90,000 km annually on foot for three consecutive years. The combination of technology and field patrolling is expected to improve threat detection, response efficiency and wildlife habitat protection. UNI MK AAB
