Odisha: Four Left parties seek CEC’s removal, halt to SIR

Bhubaneswar, Sep 26 (UNI) Four Left parties on Saturday demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, an independent inquiry into allegations raised against him, and the immediate suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML) Liberation and Forward Bloc also called for the restoration of names of all eligible voters allegedly excluded from the electoral rolls and for the Election Commission’s independent and transparent functioning to be restored.
The demands were raised during a protest march, demonstration and public meeting on Mahatma Gandhi Marg, where the parties alleged that the SIR exercise had raised serious concerns over the right to vote and the credibility of the electoral process.
The parties also called for the implementation of the Supreme Court’s guidelines on the appointment of Election Commissioners. They said the preparation, revision and deletion of electoral-roll entries must be transparent, impartial, lawful and verifiable.
Addressing the gathering, Left leaders alleged that eligible citizens could be denied their franchise because of administrative lapses, software glitches, unclear documentation or opaque verification procedures.
They referred to a September 23 report in a national daily which said Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections at least 14 times over 10 months on matters relating to voter registration, deletion and restoration of names, SIR and electoral-data management.
The report also highlighted concerns over centralisation of electoral data and a software-related problem affecting 97 eligible voters in Goa. The four parties announced a nationwide protest campaign from September 26 to October 2 and appealed to opposition parties, workers, farmers, youth, students, women and civil society groups to join the agitation. CPI state secretary Prashant Kumar Mishra, CPI(M) state secretary Suresh Chandra Panigrahi, CPI(ML) Liberation state secretary Yudhishthir Mahapatra and Forward Bloc state general secretary Jyoti Ranjan Mahapatra led the protest.UNI MK AAB
