Odisha Police SI jumps into pond to escape vigilance team, but gets caught

Bhubaneswar, Nov 4 (UNI) In a dramatic attempt to evade arrest, a Sub-Inspector of Police in Odisha's Sambalpur district jumped into a nearby pond after being confronted by an Odisha Vigilance team during a bribery trap.
However, his attempt to escape proved unsuccessful, as a vigilance personnel member also plunged into the water and apprehended him.
The arrested officer, identified as Sujit Kumar Mohanta, Sub-Inspector of Police at Mahulpali Police Station in Sambalpur district, was allegedly caught while accepting a bribe of Rs.10,000 from a complainant for finalising a miscellaneous case in which he was the investigating officer.
According to Vigilance sources, the officer had allegedly demanded the money to settle the case. On Wednesday evening, he called the complainant to a secluded spot outside the police station to collect the bribe.
After receiving the money, Mohanta reportedly noticed the presence of the Vigilance team and immediately attempted to flee to avoid arrest.
The vigilance personnel chased him. In a desperate bid to escape, the Sub-Inspector jumped into a nearby pond. However, one of the vigilance team members followed him into the water, swam towards him and successfully apprehended him.
The entire bribe amount of Rs.10,000 was recovered from his possession.
Following the trap, Odisha Vigilance launched searches at locations associated with the accused officer as part of a disproportionate assets (DA) investigation. During the searches, an additional Rs.1,55,700 in cash was recovered from his rest room on the police station premises.
A case has been registered against Mohanta under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
The accused Sub-Inspector had joined the Odisha Police Service in 2021 through direct recruitment.
