Patients allegedly forced out of Newtown nursing home in midnight attack; police probe property dispute

Kolkata, Nov 4 (UNI) Several patients undergoing treatment at a nursing home in Newtown were allegedly forced out in the middle of the night after a group of men stormed the facility, assaulted security personnel and staff, and forcibly vacated the premises, police said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at around 2.30 am, when the group allegedly entered the nursing home, first assaulting the security guard posted outside before attacking employees and nurses inside. Several patients were admitted to the facility at the time, some of whom were asleep, while others had intravenous cannulas inserted in their hands.
The attackers allegedly removed the cannulas and forced the patients to leave the premises, according to a nursing home representative.
The disturbance continued until the early hours of Wednesday. Police reached the nursing home after receiving an emergency call on the 100 helpline, but found the premises deserted and locked by the time they arrived.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident stemmed from a longstanding dispute between the property owner and the nursing home management, a senior Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate official said.
Both parties have levelled allegations against each other, and the dispute is already pending before
a court, a police officer said.
The nursing home management has alleged that the attackers were acting on behalf of the property owner and had targeted the facility to forcibly evict it.
The property owner, however, has denied the allegations of assault and told the police that the nursing home had been operating without a valid licence since July 2025.

The owner has also claimed that more than Rs 9 crore in rent remained unpaid since the property was leased in 2019 at a monthly rental of Rs 20 lakh.
Police said they had received verbal complaints from both sides but no formal written complaint had been lodged at Newtown police station till Wednesday evening.
"We have heard their verbal complaints and asked them to submit written complaints. The allegations made by both parties will be examined, and appropriate legal action will be taken in accordance with the law," a senior police official said.
