ED raids Kolkata businessman's residence over alleged hawala transactions worth crores

Kolkata, Nov 4 (UNI) Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials on Wednesday raided the residence of a businessman at Kamalgazi, on the city's southern fringes, in connection with his alleged involvement in money laundering through the 'hawala' system under the guise of a trading business.
ED sources said the search operation, which began in the morning, was linked to a case registered in Guwahati.
The businessman, Shyamal Byapari, allegedly carried out hawala transactions worth crores of rupees through the internet, using a rice trading business as a front.
With support from central security forces, ED officials conducted simultaneous searches at four locations.
Officials are examining whether the large-scale transactions are linked to funds generated through cyber fraud. During the searches, they are also attempting to secure digital evidence, financial records and other crucial documents.
Suspicious bank accounts are under scrutiny, and ED sources indicated that these could be frozen if necessary. UNI BGA NST CDS
