Technical, scientific and professional literature should be available in Odia: Odisha Governor

Bhubaneswar, Sep 26 (UNI) Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Saturday called for concerted efforts to make Odia a language of knowledge, skills, innovation and opportunity, stressing the need to make quality technical, scientific and professional literature available in the mother tongue.
Addressing a state-level seminar on “Our Language, Our Pride and the Way Forward for Viksit Odisha@2036”, organised by socio-cultural and literary organisation Viswamukti, Kambhampati said laws, government schemes and other essential public documents should also be translated into simple and accessible Odia.
Such an initiative, he said, would enable citizens, particularly students from Odia-medium backgrounds, to understand information better, acquire knowledge with confidence and pursue greater opportunities.
Describing language as much more than a means of communication, the Governor said the mother tongue embodies a people’s memory, imagination, values and collective aspirations. It builds confidence among children, facilitates the sharing of knowledge within communities and enables people to participate meaningfully in social and economic life.
Kambhampati stressed that students from Odia-medium schools must have equal opportunities in higher education, professional careers and emerging technologies.
Appreciating the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for its emphasis on mother-tongue-based education, he commended the state government for taking steps to strengthen mother-tongue education in Odisha.
“A strong foundation in Odia, complemented by proficiency in English and other languages, will enable the youth to broaden their horizons and contribute effectively to the development of the state,” he said.
On the occasion, the Governor released the poetry collection ‘Uthibaki Jati Ra Kankala’, authored by Law, Excise and Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, and congratulated the minister on the publication.
Highlighting Odisha’s rich linguistic and literary heritage, Kambhampati referred to the contributions of eminent literary figures including Jayadeva, Sarala Das and Upendra Bhanja.
He said the formation of Odisha as a separate province on the basis of language was a landmark achievement and placed a responsibility on every generation to preserve, enrich and carry forward the state’s linguistic heritage.
As Odisha moves towards the vision of Viksit Odisha@2036, the Governor said Odia must evolve as a dynamic language of knowledge and innovation. Modern technology, digital platforms and artificial intelligence, he added, could play a transformative role in keeping the language relevant, accessible and engaging for younger generations.
Kambhampati also called for ensuring equal access to knowledge, skills, technology and opportunities for youth, women, workers and communities across both rural and urban Odisha.
Law, Excise and Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, Higher Education, Sports and Youth Services, and Odia Language, Literature and Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, Bhubaneswar (Ekamra) MLA Babu Singh, eminent writer and orator Prof Archana Nayak, and eminent writer Achyut Biswaranjan also spoke at the seminar.
