NKS, NYCS call 12-hour Odisha bandh on Sept 30 over textbook errors

Bhubaneswar, Sep 26 (UNI) The Nabnirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS) and Nabnirman Yuva Chhatra Sangathan (NYCS) on Saturday called for a 12-hour Odisha bandh on September 30, demanding the resignation of School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond over alleged errors in school textbooks and immediate replacement of the faulty books.
The organisations claimed that as many as 1,678 errors had been detected in textbooks prescribed for students from Class I to VIII and alleged that the state government had failed to initiate any meaningful dialogue despite their agitation at Lower PMG in Bhubaneswar entering its 37th day.
NKS and NYCS founder Akshay Kumar said the indefinite hunger strike and Satyagraha would continue until the School and Mass Education Minister resigned or was removed by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
He warned that the organisations would intensify the people's movement if the government failed to address their demands.
NYCS state convenor Manwar Ali alleged that more than one crore students were being affected by the alleged irregularities in textbooks and warned of further intensification of the agitation if the government continued to remain silent.
He alleged that the government had failed to give adequate attention to students studying in Odia-medium schools and said the delay in supplying corrected textbooks had caused hardship to students with examinations approaching.
NKS state co-convenor Rashmi Ranjan Swain said farmers, agricultural labourers and workers would join students and youths in the agitation.
According to the organisers, Ali had launched an indefinite hunger strike on August 20 over a six-point charter of demands and continued it for 18 days before ending the fast on September 6.
Since September 6, Kumar has been sitting on an indefinite hunger strike at the same Satyagraha site.
Kumar reiterated that he would continue the hunger strike until the School and Mass Education Minister resigned or was removed by the Chief Minister.
The organisations appealed to students, youths, parents, farmers, agricultural labourers, workers, opposition political parties and intellectuals to participate in the September 30 bandh in support of their demands.
