Five killed, roads cut off as landslides ravage Mizoram

Aizawl, May 31 (UNI) Unrelenting monsoon rains lashing Mizoram since Thursday have wreaked havoc across the state, claiming five lives, toppling at least 18 buildings, and cutting off key roads in the southern and eastern regions due to widespread landslides and mudslides, officials said on Saturday.
In Vaphai village near the Myanmar border (Champhai district), a major landslide struck around 4:15 AM Saturday, burying an Assam-type house sheltering refugees from Myanmar.
Three members of the family — Lenkhuaithanga (71), his daughter Lalneihthuami (48), and daughter-in-law Lalramniengi (34) — were killed on the spot, according to Vaphai Village Council President Johny Rengkhuma. Two others, Lalneihthuami’s son Pekhmingthanga (28) and a guest, Lalzama, both also refugees, managed to escape but were injured. Both hail from Vutbuak village in Myanmar’s Chin state. The injured were transported to Champhai district hospital.
