Bengal plans 11 new government polytechnic colleges across nine districts

Asansol, Sep 29 (UNI) In a major push towards industrialisation and employment generation, the Suvendu Adhikari-led West Bengal government has initiated plans to set up 11 new government polytechnic colleges across the state.
The administration is scouting for land to establish these institutes in sub-divisions that currently lack technical education facilities.
The initiative comes amid the government's push to attract industrial investment and create employment. The state recently allotted land to 33 industrial projects, with the projects expected to bring investments of around Rs 60,000 crore and generate nearly 62,000 jobs.
Foundation stones have already been laid for several manufacturing plants, including steel, hosiery and dairy facilities, across Bankura, Purulia, Howrah and Hooghly. The Gautam Adani Group is also set to develop a mega Medical City project in Newtown, Rajarhat.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said these upcoming industrial and healthcare projects would create employment opportunities and generate demand for both skilled and unskilled labour in the state.
A key project is the Panagarh Industrial Park in West Burdwan, developed by the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC). Here, 20.5 acres of land has already been handed over to Sova Solar for a Rs 500-crore solar photovoltaic cell manufacturing plant, which is expected to generate around 500 direct jobs. In Raghunathpur Industrial Park in Purulia, 256 acres of land were handed over to Jupiter Defence for setting up West Bengal's first defence manufacturing plant.
To ensure a steady supply of skilled local youth for these industries, Rajeev Kumar, Principal Secretary of the Technical Education, Training and Skill Development Department, issued an official notification on September 25, 2026. The directive instructs District Magistrates to immediately identify suitable land for the proposed polytechnic colleges.
The notification was sent to the administrative heads of Birbhum, Cooch Behar, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas, West Burdwan, East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas.
The West Bengal government has set in motion plans to establish 11 new state-run polytechnic colleges across these nine districts as part of its effort to expand technical education.
The administration has emphasised that securing land is the primary requirement for the projects. Each proposed institute will require 1.50 acres in urban areas and four acres in rural areas.
According to the directive, the proposed locations include the Bolpur sub-division in Birbhum; Dinhata and Mekhliganj in Cooch Behar; Darjeeling Sadar in Darjeeling; Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri; and Bidhannagar in North 24 Parganas.
Additional campuses will come up in Lalbagh and Kandi in Murshidabad, Durgapur in West Burdwan, Egra in East Midnapore and Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas.
District Magistrates have been tasked with expediting the land allocation process so that construction can begin without administrative delays.
There are currently 85 government-run polytechnic colleges operating in the state, according to the information provided.
