West Bengal to permanently shut 933 schools with no students

Kolkata, Sep 22 (UNI) The West Bengal government has decided to permanently shut 933 primary, upper-primary and secondary schools that have remained without students for several years, as part of a series of measures aimed at improving transparency in recruitment and the quality of education.
“There are at least 933 schools where no admission has taken place for periods ranging from five to 20 years. This didn’t happen today but for the last 20 years these schools have been closed down. These schools have buildings and land that can be put to better use. We have formed a committee to examine the matter and submit a report,” state School Education Minister Dipak Barman said in a video message.
The school education department has also ordered the formation of district-level committees headed by district magistrates to assess the infrastructure and other assets of the closed schools and examine their possible alternative use.
