Festival of Unity begins in Manipur, CM calls Mera Hou Chongba festival a day of integrity

Imphal, Oct 26 (UNI) Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh today described the Mera Hou Chongba festival, a tradition observed since the reign of Ebudhou Nongda Lairen Pakhangba, as a “Day of Integrity” that reflects the unity and integrity of Manipur.
The festival organized on the full moon of the Manipuri month Mera every year heralds the lighting of a lamp in every Manipuri household. The lights were lit to enable their kinsmen who came from the hill areas to see the human settlements at night as the population was thin earlier.
Addressing the gathering at Kangla, the Chief Minister said that the coming together of the people of the hills and the valley on the auspicious occasion of Mera Hou Chongba could rightly be regarded as a Day of Integrity, as it symbolises the enduring bond among the people of Manipur.
The Chief Minister stated that the 36 communities of Manipur had stood together in defending the land and its independence in the past, including the Anglo-Manipur War and the Seven Years’ Devastation. He emphasised that their shared history and collective sacrifices underscored the importance of preserving the unity and integrity of the State.

The Chief Minister also lauded Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba for his initiatives in ensuring the timely completion of the Hill Chiefs’ Guest House.
He acknowledged the Maharaja’s deep emotional bond with the hill people and said that the newly constructed facility would provide a suitable place for Hill Chiefs to stay whenever they visited Imphal.
He further appreciated the Maharaja for urging that the guest house be inaugurated upon completion of the building, reflecting his commitment to ensuring that the facility was ready to serve its intended purpose.

As part of the observation, a souvenir was released, while an exchange of gifts between the hill and valley representatives was also held, symbolising the spirit of friendship, mutual respect and unity among the communities.
The Chief Minister expressed hope that the Hill Chiefs’ Guest House would further strengthen the bonds between the hill and valley people and provide a welcoming space for Hill Chiefs and community leaders visiting the capital.
