Excessive screen exposure taking a toll on youth eye health: AIIMS-Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar, Oct 13 (UNI) Prolonged screen exposure, poor visual hygiene and neglect of early symptoms are increasingly affecting young people, leading to refractive errors and computer vision syndrome, AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director Dr Ashutosh Biswas said on the occasion of World Sight Day.
The Department of Ophthalmology at the institute treats around 230–250 patients daily, with a monthly footfall of 5,000–6,000. Common eye conditions include refractive errors, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and computer vision syndrome, Dr Biswas said, warning that delayed diagnosis and treatment could lead to severe visual impairment or blindness.
However, many cases of vision loss can be prevented or effectively managed through timely medical intervention, he added.
To raise awareness about eye health and promote universal access to quality eye care, the department organised a series of awareness and community outreach activities, including a walkathon, to mark the occasion.
The programme encouraged young people to adopt healthy visual habits, take regular breaks during prolonged screen use, undergo periodic eye check-ups and consult ophthalmologists at the first sign of vision-related problems.
It also highlighted the message “Love Your Eyes”, emphasising the need to make eye care accessible, available and affordable for all.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar Dean Dr Dillip Kumar Parida, Medical Superintendent Dr Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy, Deputy Director (Administration) Lt Col Abhijit Sarkar, Head of Ophthalmology Dr Sucheta Parija, and doctors Dr Sandip Sahu, Dr Priyadarsini Mishra and Dr Bijnya B Panda attended the programme.UNI MK AAB
