Minister Tshering T. Bhutia inspects landslide-hit Rimbi as 28 houses evacuated in Sikkim

Gangtok, Sep 15 (UNI) As many as 28 houses comprising 128 people have been evacuated and shifted to the Rimbi Gram Panchayat Kendra as a precautionary measure after heavy rainfall and flooding aggravated the landslide situation in Rimbi-Singlitam in Sikkim’s Gyalshing district.
Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister and local MLA Tshering T. Bhutia visited the landslide-hit area on Tuesday and took stock of the extensive damage to houses, properties and the vital road connecting Melli, Khechuperi and Yuksom. The landslide has completely collapsed the road, severely affecting the lifeline connectivity of the area.
The fresh evacuation was ordered after the district administration assessed the situation following Monday’s heavy rainfall and flooding. Several houses and poultry units have suffered fresh damage, while landslide debris has accumulated along the Kholsa stream.
Rainwater carrying mud, stones and debris is flowing downstream towards Rimbi village, posing a serious threat to houses located along the course of the stream. The increased flow of water and debris has already washed away the RCC bridge at Rimbi, further worsening the connectivity crisis.
During his visit, Bhutia assessed the impact on affected families and discussed immediate temporary measures to restore connectivity.
He assured severely affected residents that the government would provide necessary support, including assistance for constructing new houses on newly purchased land.
Meanwhile, personnel of the 72nd Battalion Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), based at Yuksom, promptly launched rescue and evacuation operations after landslides struck Karmatar and Upper Bullung areas of West Sikkim on Monday.
The fresh damage and evacuation have added to concerns over the safety of vulnerable settlements in the region, with continuing rain threatening to trigger further landslides and disrupt road connectivity.

Odisha: 12 get life imprisonment for killing man, son over witchcraft suspicion

Bhubaneswar, Sep 17 (UNI) A court in Odisha’s Gajapati district on Thursday sentenced 12 people to life imprisonment for murdering a man and his son five years ago on suspicion that they practised witchcraft, police said.
Additional Sessions Judge, Paralakhemundi, H P Pattanaik convicted all 12 accused in the double murder case and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
