Mamata vows movement until Gyanesh Kumar quits, alleges voter roll manipulation

Kolkata, Sep 26 (UNI) Reiterating her long-standing charge against the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said the movement would continue until “Vanish Kumar” steps down from his post.
Speaking at a rally in Seerampore, her first outside Kolkata after the Trinamool Congress’ defeat in the Assembly election, she said, “Just as we have caught 'Vanish Kumar', we will catch other wrongdoers as well. Vanish Kumar must go. Our movement will continue until he is gone.”
Banerjee’s attack came against the backdrop of differences that have surfaced between the two Election Commissioners and the Chief Election Commissioner.
“Vanish Kumar carried out the SIR with the intention of taking over Bengal and removed the names of 9.3 million people. We were the first to say that the role of the officer, Seema Khanna, was suspicious,” she said.
“We have kept all the records. I was the first to use the name ‘Vanish Kumar’. Do you know why? Because names were removed from the electoral rolls one by one. They have taken over Bengal; we will take over Delhi,” she added.
Targeting Gyanesh Kumar, Banerjee alleged that her party had been “forcibly defeated” and claimed that issues ranging from the alleged “hijacking” of EVMs to paid dissemination of false reports by sections of the media would gradually come to light.
She claimed similar developments had taken place in Bihar, Bengal and Haryana.
“No one has the right to take away people’s votes,” she said, adding that the agitation would continue until Gyanesh Kumar resigned.
Banerjee claimed Bengal had been the first to highlight several issues surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), including the alleged role of Seema Khanna and what she described as the “Vanish Kumar” issue.
The former Chief Minister said she would support any political party that backed the agitation against the SIR, irrespective of its political colour. “Do not be afraid. Be prepared for arrest, speak out and stand united,” she said, while criticising the police and agencies such as the STF and CID.
Questioning the arrest of Nandigram Congress candidate Milan Pradhan ahead of the by-election, she asked, “Why was he arrested?" and said "I was also associated with the land movement. I support the Congress candidate.”
Drama unfolded before the rally when Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh alleged that his car was attacked with stones, eggs and iron rods at Uttarpara in Hooghly while he was on his way to attend the Sreerampore rally.
Reacting sharply, Banerjee told the media, “They are killing democracy. They are not allowing the opposition to function.”Banerjee also claimed that she had faced several obstacles even before reaching Sreerampore and accused the BJP and police of trying to prevent people from attending the rally.
Police vehicles accompanied her convoy, while central forces were deployed in Noapara following the alleged attack on Ghosh’s vehicle.
