Protest by Manipur journalists over Gwaltabi incident enters second week

Imphal, June 28 (UNI) Justice continues to remain out of reach for journalists in Manipur as the joint protest spearheaded by the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and the Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM) enters its second week.
The protest was launched following the controversial Gwaltabi incident, which has been widely condemned as a serious violation of press freedom in the state.
The protest, marked by journalists wearing black badges and releasing weekly protest slogans, stems from an incident that occurred during the Shirui Lily Festival in Ukhrul. A media team, officially invited by the Government of Manipur and traveling in a Manipur State Transport (MST) bus arranged by the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), was stopped multiple times by security personnel at Gwaltabi, Imphal East.
Among the personnel involved were troops from the Mahar Regiment, who reportedly instructed the journalists to cover the word "Manipur" on the bus before allowing them to proceed. This act has been strongly criticized by media bodies as a direct affront to press dignity and neutrality, effectively hindering journalists from performing their duties at a state-sponsored public event.
In response, AMWJU and EGM submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur, calling for an impartial inquiry and accountability for those responsible. However, no satisfactory response or remedial action has been received from the government to date.
Due to the continuing silence and lack of redress, the media bodies have resolved to sustain their protest.
AMWJU and EGM today urged all their members to continue wearing black badges or ribbons during their professional duties. Editors of all print, digital, and broadcast outlets are also requested to prominently feature these slogans in their bulletins and publications.
In a joint statement, Rupachandra (Secretary, EGM) and Konthoujam Gita (Joint Secretary, AMWJU) reaffirmed their commitment to defending the rights, dignity, and freedom of the press in Manipur.
