Odisha CM calls for proactive action to tackle complex social sector issues

Bhubaneswar, Oct 8 (UNI) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday directed departments concerned to adopt a more proactive and coordinated approach to identify complex social sector challenges at the grassroots and ensure their prompt and lasting resolution.
Chairing a high-level review meeting under the PRAYASS (PRoactive Governance Attempt for Yielding Results and Advancing Social Sector) initiative, Majhi stressed the need to strengthen the delivery of essential services and accelerate social sector development across the state.
The Chief Minister said a strong and healthy society rests on three critical pillars — health, nutrition and quality education — and called upon the departments concerned to improve their efficiency and responsiveness in these areas, which are directly linked to the basic needs of the people.
The meeting reviewed the functioning of the Health and Family Welfare, Women and Child Development, and School and Mass Education departments.
Reviewing the health sector, Majhi directed the Health Department to take effective measures to bring down the maternal mortality rate to the lowest possible level. He also called for concerted efforts to reduce infant and neonatal mortality rates by treating the objective as a sustained campaign.
The Chief Minister laid particular emphasis on ensuring the best possible medical care for pregnant women and newborns in rural and remote areas. He directed the department to strengthen the accountability of health workers and further improve emergency medical services and facilities.
Expressing concern over child malnutrition and its consequences, including stunting and wasting, Majhi directed the Women and Child Development Department to intensify the ‘Suposhit Odisha’ campaign to address the problem comprehensively and bring about a significant improvement in the health and nutritional status of mothers and children.
He also stressed strict quality control and effective monitoring of food and nutritional materials supplied through Anganwadi centres to ensure that beneficiaries receive quality nutrition without any compromise.
On the education front, the Chief Minister called for concerted efforts to improve the quality of foundational education from the primary level and strengthen the overall education system.
He directed teachers to focus primarily on teaching and core academic activities, expressing hope that a greater focus on classroom teaching would help improve students’ learning outcomes and educational standards.
