Meghalaya CM thanks PM Modi for recognising state’s traditional millet growers

Shillong, Oct 25 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for recognising the state’s traditional millet growers and women entrepreneurs in his monthly radio programme, 'Mann Ki Baat’, on Sunday.
In a post on X, Sangma thanked the Prime Minister for recognising Meghalaya's rich tradition of millet cultivation and highlighting the efforts of local farmers and women entrepreneurs.
The Chief Minister also thanked Modi for making special mention of Chekjing Sangma of Sadolpara village in the West Garo Hills district for reviving millet cultivation, as well as Darapbiang Mulieh and Daieidlangki Suchiang of Khanduli village in West Jaintia Hills for promoting millet-based products and preserving age-old farming traditions.
“As a government, we remain committed to supporting our farmers, strengthening rural livelihoods, and working towards our shared vision of doubling farmers’ income,” Sangma said.
In the course of his monthly radio programme, 'Mann Ki Baat’, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the revival of millet cultivation in the Northeast, noting that local agricultural communities are driving rural growth through value-added millet goods.
Modi spoke specifically about Khanduli village in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district, where millets have traditionally been part of the local food culture.
“Over many generations, millets have been an integral part of the local food culture there. Yet, for some time, the number of farmers cultivating them had been on the decline,” the Prime Minister said, highlighting how two women from Khanduli village undertook a new initiative focusing on creating new products from millets.
“Lending value addition to these grains, they developed items such as cookies, cakes, and muffins, as well as baby food. This led to an increase in the sales of millet-based products and a subsequent rise in the demand for millets themselves. Amid that, farmers there have also begun cultivating millets once again,” Modi said.
“In the village of Sadolpara, located in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, some new initiatives are underway. A local farmer there, Chekjing Sangma, recognising the importance of millets, has started cultivating them using modern methods. This has not only increased his income but has also fostered greater awareness within the village," the Prime Minister said. UNI RRK NST CDS
