Bengal fish traders allege harassment in Jharkhand

Kolkata, Sep 17 (UNI) Fish traders from West Bengal are allegedly facing harassment and extortion while transporting consignments to neighbouring Jharkhand, with traders claiming that fish-laden vehicles are being stopped and drivers threatened soon after entering the state.
A police complaint was lodged at Shibdaspur police station on Wednesday night in connection with the alleged incidents.
Traders from Rajendrapur in Naihati claim that they are facing serious difficulties in transporting fish to Jharkhand.
The Rajendrapur fish market in Naihati is among Asia’s largest fish markets, with consignments being sent to several parts of India and abroad.
Traders said the situation has become particularly difficult in recent weeks, with vehicles allegedly being stopped at the Jharkhand border and large sums of money demanded from them.
According to the traders, drivers who refuse to pay are allegedly threatened and assaulted. They have also alleged that fish consignments are being deliberately destroyed by applying poisonous substances to the fish.
The traders claimed that around seven vehicles carrying fish worth approximately Rs 18 lakh have been affected in such incidents.
The matter is also expected to be brought to the notice of Bengal Fisheries Minister Rajesh Mahato. A delegation of traders is likely to meet the minister soon to raise the issue.
Sugata Ghosh, president of the Fish Market Development Committee, said exporters had suffered the most.
“The pressure on this fish market is already high. Those involved in exports have suffered the most. Those behind these incidents are demanding ‘goonda tax’. We cannot conduct business this way. We have submitted the entire matter in writing to the state minister,” Ghosh said. UNI RC NST SAS
