Suvendu announces fresh probe into Mamata’s 2021 Nandigram leg injury claim

Kolkata, October 3 (UNI) In a significant development, West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that the state government would launch a fresh investigation into former chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s leg injury during the 2021 Assembly election campaign in Nandigram, claiming that medical records did not show any fracture or dislocation.
Displaying a radiodiagnosis report from the Bangur Institute of Neurosciences at a press conference at Nabanna on Saturday, Adhikari said the document dated March 11, 2021, recorded that there was “no evidence of fracture”.
“In 2021, the entire Nandigram was insulted by the then chief minister, who claimed that her leg had been broken,” Adhikari said.

He added that the government would take further action after the Nandigram bypoll and the lifting of the Model Code of Conduct.

“I am not saying anything more on this now. The CID is investigating. Once the Model Code of Conduct is lifted, we will initiate a fresh investigation into this false propaganda. I will announce the next steps after October 9,” he said.

The controversy dates back to March 10, 2021, when Banerjee, then chief minister and Trinamool Congress candidate from Nandigram, allegedly sustained an injury during her election campaign.

She subsequently campaigned in a wheelchair with her leg in plaster and alleged that she had been pushed by a group of people.

She had also indirectly blamed Adhikari, then her BJP rival in Nandigram, for the incident.

The BJP had questioned the account during the 2021 campaign, while Trinamool had built a campaign around Banerjee’s injured leg, including the slogan “Khela Hobe”.

Banerjee eventually lost Nandigram to Adhikari by 1,956 votes after a recount.

However, according to sources in SSKM a four- to five-member medical board comprising specialists in orthopaedics, surgery, neuromedicine and neurosurgery had overseen her treatment.

Adhikari, who is also in charge of the police portfolio, said the government would act after the bypoll.

“Action will be taken after October 9. Just as an allegation can be investigated, action can also be taken if a false allegation is made,” he said.

The Nandigram Assembly bypoll is scheduled for October 6, with counting on October 9.

At the same press conference, Adhikari also announced a subsidised food package for the Durga Puja season, saying around two crore families would receive flour, sugar and semolina at half price through the public distribution system.

e said beneficiaries would get one kilogram of flour for Rs 19, with the state government providing a subsidy of Rs 19 per kilogram. Sugar would be available at Rs 30 per kilogram, with the government bearing an equal amount as subsidy. Around 500 grams of semolina would also be provided, with the procurement process still under way.

The state government has said the festive package will cover around 2.12 crore families, compared with about 78 lakh beneficiaries under the earlier arrangement. UNI SAG AAB
