Cong protests, demands resignation of CEC

Patna, Sep 25 (UNI) The Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee today held a protest march demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Leading the march, Bihar Congress president Rajesh Ram referred to Rahul Gandhi''s ''Voter Rights Yatra'', organised ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, and said that questions concerning the functioning of the Election Commission and electoral rolls had been raised during the campaign.
Addressing the gathering, Ram alleged that objections raised during meetings of the Election Commission had been ignored and accused the Chief Election Commissioner of weakening the democratic system.
He demanded that Gyanesh Kumar resign immediately and apologise to the country.
He also raised allegations concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls conducted in Bihar.
According to Ram, voter mapping had also been undertaken in other states ahead of elections and, he alleged, this had provided an electoral advantage to the BJP.
The Congress leader said the Election Commission, as a constitutional institution, has a responsibility to ensure free, fair and transparent elections.
He also alleged that the Commission's refusal to provide electronic data related to electoral rolls and CCTV footage had raised questions about the electoral process.
Ram further demanded a review of elections conducted under the leadership of the Chief Election Commissioner if it was established that his functioning had affected the electoral process.
He called for fresh elections in states allegedly affected by the SIR exercise and alleged irregularities, including Bihar.
He warned that the Congress would intensify its agitation if the Chief Election Commissioner did not resign.
The protest march began near Chanakya Hotel at R Block and proceeded towards the State Election Commission office.
Police attempted to stop the protesters near the MLC Quarters on Atal Path by putting up barricades. When the protesters insisted on moving forward, police used water cannons to disperse them.
During the demonstration, Congress workers raised slogans against the Election Commission and the Chief Election Commissioner and carried placards highlighting their demands. Some protesters also burnt an effigy of the Chief Election Commissioner, which police attempted to extinguish using water cannons. UNI RS SAS
