Kharge’s remark on Modi triggers political row, BJP leaders hit back

Patna, Oct 25 (UNI) A ruckus broke out during Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s address at an event marking the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first Chief Minister, Dr Shri Krishna Singh, in Patna on Sunday after a man interrupted his speech while he was criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As Kharge targeted Modi, a man in the auditorium shouted that the Prime Minister was not going anywhere. Responding to the interruption, Kharge said, “Modi kya, Modi ka baap bhi jayega” (Not just Modi, even his father will go).
The exchange heightened tensions at the venue. Congress workers caught hold of the man and began beating him in front of Kharge. The Congress President, however, appealed to the workers to remain calm.
The man’s identity and the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault could not be independently confirmed. It was also unclear who had accompanied him to the event or why he had protested.
During his address, Kharge criticised the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Prime Minister Modi. He described Kumar as a “traitor” and an “agent of the Bharatiya Janata Party”.
Kharge also said there would be no peace in the country until the RSS ideology was eliminated.
BJP leaders strongly condemned Kharge’s remarks, accusing the Congress President of crossing the limits of political decorum.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah alleged that Kharge had crossed all limits of propriety by making an objectionable remark about Modi’s father.
In a post on X, Shah said this was not the first time the Congress had used derogatory language against Modi or his family. He referred to past remarks about the Prime Minister’s mother and comments describing Modi as a “merchant of death” and a “chaiwala”.
Shah alleged that under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, the Congress was increasingly crossing the limits of decency. Attributing the party’s conduct to frustration over repeated electoral defeats over the past 12 years, he claimed that it had no policies or substantive issues left and was relying on abusive political rhetoric.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also condemned Kharge’s statement and said, “Congress must apologise to the nation.”
BJP President Nitin Nabin also condemned Kharge’s remarks, describing the language used against Modi as “indecent and unparliamentary” and alleging that it reflected the Congress’s ideological bankruptcy.
In a post on X, Nabin said political opposition should maintain a degree of dignity. He accused Rahul Gandhi and the opposition of repeatedly bringing deceased family members into political speeches.
Nabin further alleged that the opposition resorted to personal attacks because it lacked substantive issues to debate on development, policy and public welfare.
