KSU urges Meghalaya CM to set up independent probe into police extortion racket

Shillong, Oct 5 (UNI) The Khasi Students’ union (KSU) on Monday urged Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to set up an independent body to probe an extortion racket allegedly run by police personnel targeting truckers along the Shillong Bypass.
In a complaint to Sangma, the powerful students’ body said the independent probe should be free from police reach or intervention.
The KSU demanded the immediate removal of Vivek Syiem as Superintendent of Police for East Khasi Hills District to prevent him from further “hampering and tampering with evidence, and influencing and intimidating other police officials who may be witnesses to this illegal extortion.”
The union also urged the Chief Minister to remove the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills district Abhilash Baranwal for his failure to tackle the illegal extortion of the police and to prevent him from influencing the matter.
In its complaint, the KSU also urged the Chief Minister to act immediately in the said matter to ensure that the corrupt police officials and others involved be brought to justice.
The union also informed the Chief Minister that it would not file a First Information Report or formal complaint at a police station, stating that “a thief cannot investigate a thief, and the police would do their best to shield themselves, hence there is no point.”
Following the KSU's expose of the extortion racket targeting truckers—allegedly run by police personnel in the Mawkhanu and Thangshalai areas along the Shillong Bypass road—the Meghalaya police department suspended four constables and transferred the officer-in-charge of the Diengpasoh police station and ordered an inquiry into the matter.
The truckers claimed that they had to shell out money ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 500 to police personnel camping in a shed along the bypass.
