Meghalaya govt seeks report regarding death of three-yr-old child due to poor connectivity

Shillong, Oct 5 (UNI) Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said a state medical team will visit Domkyrkoh village in the West Khasi Hills district on Tuesday to ascertain the circumstances that led to the death of a three-year-old child in his mother’s arms due to lack of immediate medical treatment.
Habankyrshan Marbaniang, reportedly died in his mother's arms, as his parents, finding no vehicle in the village, had set out to walk around 10 kilometers to Mawdet to find transportation.

“I think the issue was primarily because of poor connectivity rather than a lack of health services. The family could not reach the health facility because of the poor road conditions,” Shylla said.
Taking “serious note of the tragic death” of the child, district authorities in West Khasi Hills have initiated steps to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and to assess the healthcare, transport and road connectivity challenges faced by the residents of the area.
To establish the complete sequence of events, Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills Hema Nayak has also sought reports from the Rambrai Block Development Officer, District Medical & Health Officer, West Khasi Hills; and Executive Engineer, PWD (Roads) into the tragic incident.
A multi-disciplinary team from the Health Department will conduct an on-ground field inspection at Domkyrkoh village on Tuesday.
“The findings will guide the District Administration in taking appropriate immediate measures to strengthen healthcare access and emergency response in the area. At the same time, the PWD (Roads) will pursue necessary steps towards execution of the sanctioned CRIF road project for providing permanent and improved connectivity to Domkyrkoh and the wider Mawdet region,” an official said.
Domkyrkoh village falls under the healthcare coverage area of Mawkhiat Sub-Centre, a functional PM-ABHIM Sub-Centre which has been operational for the past year.
The Sub-Centre is located approximately one and a half hours on foot from the village and falls under Rambrai PHC.
A CM’s Safe Motherhood Scheme transport arrangement is available in the region for emergency patient transfers.
However, preliminary information indicates that local health workers were not informed about the child's illness before or during the onset of symptoms, and therefore the available local emergency transport mechanism could not be activated at that stage, the official said.
The incident also highlights the significant transportation difficulties faced by residents of Domkyrkoh.
“Vehicular access passes through Mainop village, and the road becomes non-motorable during adverse weather conditions and heavy rainfall,” the official said, adding that they were cognizant of the long-standing road connectivity challenges faced by Domkyrkoh and surrounding areas.
