Former Meghalaya CM slams privatisation of Tura Medical College

Shillong, May 23 (UNI) Former Meghalaya Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator, Dr. Mukul M. Sangma on Friday came down on the NPP-led coalition government for its decision to privatise the much-awaited Tura medical college
Terming the government’s decision to privatise Tura medical college an “anti-people”, Sangma said he would launch a protest if the Conrad Sangma-led government fails to rescind its decision.
The medical doctor-turned politician said the objective of setting up the Tura medical college as a government college was to benefit the youth of the state. He also called for a collective effort to pressurise the government to establish Tura medical college as a government medical college in the overall interest of the people of the state.
“Private sector always adopts their hire and fire mode that means there is no social security of the employees, who will be employed in the private sector,” the former Chief Minister said.
“ … , it is going to be disastrous for the future of the state if Tura Medical College is subjected to private investment in any mode whether it is PPP mode or whether it is any other mode of privatisation,” he added.
Urging the people to support his proposed protest if the government refused to comply to his demand, the TMC legislator said, “I am alarmed and I would like to set this alarm bell to everyone in the state that the incumbent government is in a privatisation spree. It is in a privatisation spree and it is a very dangerous trend and we must put a brake on this.”
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who inspected the ongoing construction of Tura medical college on May 6, had said that the government is exploring partnerships for the management and operation of the Tura Medical college, while retaining ownership of the institution.
“Tura Medical College will primarily serve the students of Meghalaya. A majority of the seats will be reserved for students from the state, ensuring better access to medical education for our youth,” the Chief Minister had said.
The Tura medical college project, situated on 99 acres of land, has received a total financial sanction of Rs 189 crore, including Rs 170.10 crore from the central government and another Rs 19 crore from the state government.
The Chief Minister said that the medical college has reached 80 percent completion in terms of construction.
