Naveen seeks CEC resignation, calls for fresh review of SIR exercise

Bhubaneswar, Sep 25 (UNI) Odisha Leader of Opposition and BJD president Naveen Patnaik on Friday demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing “sharp differences” among members of the Election Commission, and called for a thorough review of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
“The CEC should immediately resign and the whole SIR process should be thoroughly revisited,” Patnaik said, reiterating the BJD’s opposition to the exercise from the outset.
The BJD had earlier alleged that the SIR exercise resulted in the exclusion of around 27.5 lakh voters and had raised concerns over alleged manipulation and lack of transparency in the revision process.
On the proposed amendments under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, Patnaik questioned the rationale behind blaming others when 20 Lok Sabha MPs from Odisha had supported the Bill in Parliament.
“We in the BJD strongly oppose such revision. In this process, it is too much of a loss of revenue for the state. We will take it up very strongly,” he said.
