Bengal CM Adhikari warns against TMC rally during Durga Puja, says law and order will be enforced

Kolkata, Oct 13 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has warned that no meeting or rally violating the law will be permitted during Durga Puja, as the political temperature in Kolkata rises ahead of a Trinamool Congress-backed march demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The march, scheduled for Tuesday from Rajabazar to Park Circus, has been called by the Mamata Banerjee camp of the Trinamool Congress. Former chief minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to participate in the procession, according to a publicity leaflet circulated by the faction.
Speaking late on Monday night during a visit to the Durga Puja celebrations at Allen Park, Adhikari said his government would not allow anyone to disturb public order during the festive season. He also said he had instructed the Kolkata Police Commissioner to take appropriate legal action against any attempt to create unrest.
“During Durga Puja, no one will be allowed to create disorder. I have instructed the Police Commissioner to take appropriate legal action. They will not be allowed to proceed even a step beyond Rajabazar,” Adhikari said, referring to the proposed procession.
The Chief Minister warned that the administration would take action if any political programme turned disruptive. He also indicated that central forces could be deployed, if necessary, to maintain peace during the festivities.
In a sharp political attack on the organisers, Adhikari alleged that forces opposed to Hindu interests were attempting to create unrest in the state. Referring to slogans associated with separatist politics, he said such elements would be defeated. He also called for action against those allegedly responsible for attacks on Hindu organisations and activists.
The proposed procession comes amid a wider opposition campaign against Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of electoral irregularities linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have accused the Election Commission of facilitating electoral manipulation through the exercise, a charge that has become a major point of political confrontation.
The issue has triggered protests in New Delhi, with opposition leaders demanding the Chief Election Commissioner's resignation. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has also approached the Supreme Court, seeking its intervention in the matter. The petition was expected to come up for hearing on Tuesday.
The publicity material issued by the Mamata Banerjee camp accuses the Centre of suppressing democratic voices. It also refers to the detention of Banerjee in Delhi and the alleged mistreatment of young protesters, urging people to unite against such actions.
The faction has reportedly communicated plans for similar programmes to its supporters in different districts.
The proposed Kolkata march has added a new dimension to the confrontation between the ruling BJP and the Trinamool Congress faction led by Banerjee. While the organisers have projected the demonstration as a protest in defence of democratic rights, Adhikari has made it clear that the administration will not tolerate any violation of law during the Puja.
With large crowds expected to visit pandals across Kolkata, the proposed procession is likely to put the police administration on alert. The challenge for the authorities will be to maintain public order while ensuring that lawful political expression is not unnecessarily obstructed.
