Mamata Banerjee condemns attack on lawyer, alleges bid to establish ‘jungle raj’ in Bengal

Kolkata, Oct 4 (UNI) Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has condemned the alleged assault on newly elected West Bengal Bar Council member and lawyer Shamim Ahmed in the Salboni police station area of West Midnapore, accusing the BJP of attempting to create a climate of fear and establish a “jungle raj” in the state.
Banerjee, in a post on X, alleged that Ahmed was subjected to severe physical assault and subsequently pressured to alter the original complaint.
She claimed that it was only after the urgent intervention of the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court that the lawyer was able to return home safely.
Referring to alleged incidents of attacks on lawyers at Bankshall Court and the Baruipur court in recent times, Banerjee said Bengal would not accept a culture of intimidation or “jungle raj”.
“West Bengal will not accept the culture of intimidation or jungle raj under any circumstances. The rule of law must be established by rising above political violence,” she said.
Banerjee also demanded that the professional safety of lawyers, irrespective of their political affiliations or ideology, be ensured.
She called for an impartial investigation and stringent legal action against those responsible, alleging that BJP cadres were involved in the attack.
Ahmed, meanwhile, has vowed not to be intimidated by the assault and has sought to place the incident in a wider political and constitutional context.
Describing the prevailing situation as a conflict between two opposing camps, he said the country was currently divided between those seeking to protect the Constitution and those allegedly working towards its destruction.
“There are currently two clear groups in the country — one wants to protect the Constitution, while the other wants to destroy it. Our fight will continue with those who are fighting to protect the Constitution,” Ahmed said.
The lawyer said he had travelled to Salboni to provide legal assistance to ordinary people who had allegedly been forced to leave their homes for a prolonged period due to political hostility.
According to Ahmed, attempts to silence lawyers ultimately amount to an attack on ordinary litigants seeking justice.
He said the objective of providing legal assistance was to help people who had been unable to return to their homes for years and bring them back into the mainstream.
He alleged that the attack was intended to prevent such legal assistance. However, Ahmed maintained that intimidation would not force him or others involved in the initiative to abandon the fight.
“The movement to protect the Constitution will continue with the support of ordinary people, from the streets to the courts,” he said.
