Kolkata Police to deploy 31,000 personnel during Durga Puja

Kolkata, Oct 13 (UNI) Around 31,000 security personnel will be deployed on city roads to ensure security during the upcoming Durga Puja, Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand said on Tuesday.
Addressing a media conference here, Nand said special surveillance arrangements would be put in place to manage traffic across the city.
During the media meet, Nand unveiled the Durga Puja guide map, an initiative undertaken in collaboration with the Indian Oil Corporation.
Leave for all city police personnel has been cancelled as the force prepares to step up security during the festival.
"To prevent unrest or untoward incidents, we will deploy approximately 31,000 personnel. This force includes 6,000 civic volunteers and home guards, with the remainder comprising constables, police officers, and officials of various ranks," Nand said.
Ambulances will be stationed at 14 locations, while emergency helplines 112 and 100 will remain operational round the clock. If a visitor falls ill, an ambulance from one of the designated points will be dispatched to provide medical assistance.
"Traffic congestion often arises as crowds swell across the city during Durga Puja. Specific traffic management strategies are required to handle this. We set up barricades in many areas depending on the expected crowd flow," he said.
Nand noted that the movement of visitors follows a specific flow, often viewed as a continuous circuit, and any disruption to this pattern can cause problems.
"For this reason, the guide map has been created," he said.
He further stated that traffic pressure on the Maa Flyover had increased due to the growing number of commuters travelling to and from New Town and Salt Lake. Police analysis of traffic data over the past few months had confirmed the growing reliance on the flyover.
"Consequently, vehicle breakdowns on the elevated stretch cause significant disruptions. To mitigate this, arrangements have been made to station breakdown vans on the bridge itself," Nand said.
