Nandankanan opens 11 newly acquired exotic species for public display

Bhubaneswar, Oct 3 (UNI) Nandankanan Zoological Park on Saturday opened 11 newly acquired exotic species, including zebra, kangaroo, wallaby and three species of macaws, for public display on the eve of the state-level Wildlife Week celebrations.
The new arrivals, comprising 36 individuals, were formally opened for visitors as part of the zoo's efforts to strengthen wildlife conservation, education and awareness.
The animals include zebra, kangaroo, Bennett's wallaby, tufted capuchin, Scarlet Macaw, Blue-and-Gold Macaw, Green-Winged Macaw, meerkat, Scarlet Ibis and Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo. Nandankanan had so far neither zebra nor kangaroo in its collection.
The zoological park received 14 species comprising 58 individuals as a donation from the Radha Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust (RKTEWT), Gujarat, in the second week of September this year.
The donated animals include four zebras, four kangaroos, six Bennett's wallabies, four ring-tailed lemurs, four tufted capuchins, four Scarlet Macaws, four Blue-and-Gold Macaws, four Green-Winged Macaws, four Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos, four Crowned Cranes, four Scarlet Ibises, six meerkats, two cassowaries and four Blue Wildebeests.
The new additions are expected to enhance Nandankanan's species diversity and strengthen its conservation and education programmes. They will also provide visitors an opportunity to learn about wildlife from different geographical regions, their ecological adaptations and the importance of biodiversity conservation.
Nandankanan authorities have also sought permission from the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to import two female red kangaroos from the Czech Republic and two zebras from another country. The authorities have received approval for the proposed imports, officials said.
