NTCA approves recapture of Buxa tigress; Bengal forest minister says ‘Queen of Dooars’ will be brought back

Siliguri, Nov 2 (UNI) West Bengal Forest Minister Manoj Kumar Oraon on Monday evening announced that the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) had granted approval for the recapture of the tigress that strayed from Buxa Tiger Reserve in West Bengal into Raimona National Park in Assam.
“We have received the approval from the NTCA. We are bringing back our Queen of Dooars,” Oraon said in a video message from Raimona National Park, where he had reached to take stock of the situation and coordinate the operation with the Assam forest authorities.
The minister’s announcement comes after nearly seven to eight days of uncertainty over the movement of the tigress, which had crossed into Assam after being released in Buxa Tiger Reserve on October 2.
The tigress, brought from Bihar’s Valmiki Tiger Reserve, was released in Buxa as part of an initiative to strengthen the tiger population in the reserve. However, she subsequently crossed the Sankosh river and entered Raimona National Park in Assam before moving towards areas close to human habitation.
The forest departments of West Bengal and Assam have been jointly monitoring her movements and coordinating efforts to bring her back safely to Buxa.
On Sunday evening, Oraon had said that the tigress was staying within an area of around 30 to 35 hectares near a village and was not moving much. He had also assured that she was being monitored round the clock and that there was no reason for panic.
The minister had indicated that the tigress would be brought back within two to four days, subject to the necessary approval and operational arrangements.
With the NTCA approval now received, the joint operation is expected to move forward. However, Oraon did not disclose the precise method of recapture, including whether the animal would be tranquilised or captured through another procedure.
“We will not call her a tiger or a tigress. She is our Queen of Dooars, our pride. We are bringing her back,” the minister said.
He added that Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was also concerned about the tigress and her safe return to Buxa. UNI MBN NST CDS
